About Me

Uhm. Where to begin…

I have played music for as long as I can remember. I had an idea of how to play piano before I really knew what I was doing with it as an instrument or took any lessons or learned to read music, and so every teacher has had a tragically uphill climb when trying to instruct me. Piano is definitely my first love, musically, though over the years I have gained some proficiency in playing violin and double bass. I made an attempt at learning guitar, which culminated in a very high-energy, particularly strummy version of “(You Ain’t Nothin’ But A) Hound-Dog,” but nothing else. I also made an attempt at learning saxophone, which I promise you culminated in even less. Three months on and I couldn’t even manage a scale on the bloody thing...! I’ve never seen a teacher so pleased to let a student go. Through learning violin and double bass, I can somewhat play around on a ‘cello and on a viola, though not enough to consider myself any good at either.

I remember that, as a child, I used to sit at the huge oak table we had in our dining room and play it. Though I didn’t understand that it was caused by the natural imperfections of the wood at the time, I knew that hitting certain parts of the table would produce tones that I couldn’t get from hitting another part.

I am certain that my parents dreaded breakfast time as a result, and were entirely justified in their dread. Funny how, now, that kind of bonking could be recorded and packaged as “found sound” music. I still think of myself as the quirky six-year-old, ear pressed to the table, knuckles growing ever redder as I tried to pick out a solid-sounding note.

Lately, I compose mostly on computers. There was a time I would have balked at the very notion, but technology is a pharmakon in its ability to simultaneously create ease while lulling one into a sense that everything will subsequently be easier. And so, I have been drawn in, and think I’ll happily (if exhaustedly) reside there for a while.

Lots of things inspire me, too many to justifiably mention here; but sufficed to say I believe that music is, at its base nature, a reflection of its surroundings, be they happenings on the world stage or the tapping on a table.

I love to get email. Send me a note. I may not always have the best replying-habits, but I’ll certainly read every one.
